We have two big birthdays coming up this summer, In August my husband will turn 50 and my father will turn 70. We have all been through surprise parties so I wanted to do something different that would include family and possibly a few friends. I realize how quickly August will be here and I want to be prepared. Any suggestions?

I think you need to talk to your husband about what he wants for his birthday. I know personally I don't like to be the center of attention at a party. Maybe it would mean the most to him to spend some quality time with his family, how often do any of us get to be together anymore for a day or weekend? That's what means the most to me anyway.

What are their passions? If it's in your budget... Does your husband enjoy golfing? What about a trip to Myrtle Beach? Has your Father always wanted to go to a Super Bowl? Birthdays don't always have to be about family gatherings, as much as we want them to be. My husband went on the father-son camping trip to Colorado that his father had always dreamed of. His Dad was in the beginning stages of a type a Parkinson's, and my husband will cherish it always (his Dad passed away two summers ago). We also recently drove from Arkansas to SanDiego, CA and we had my Mother-in-law come with us. It was crowded with 5 in the van, but at age 75, she got to see countryside and landscapes that she had never seen, and got to visit the Pacific Ocean for the first (and perhaps last) time. If you can, make their dreams come true on their special birthdays. Have everybody pitch in. Good luck!!
