Hi, I am needing help with my 4th graders homework. He is struggling in math , social studies and reading. He is in the pace program. He was getting good grades and all of sudden his grades are declining. Help.

I would start with his pace teachers. This is the exact age my son started butting heads with me over homework. I wasn't sure if he was getting it or not because every time I would discuss it with him he would scream at me. I think a tutor is a great idea. I got one for my son. I found a previous teacher that he loved that did some outside tutoring so it took the pressure off of me and my son.

I bet there is something under the surface here that is causing a shift in grades-- usually there is when it happens all of the sudden. Has anything changed in his home life? Is he having issues with any kids at school? If there is nothing obvious at home, I would start by talking with his teachers. Just ask them if they have noticed any changes in his behavior at school, or changes in friendships that could be affecting him. Teachers can be a great resource. Also, you could check with the school counselor. The main thing is to not let it go on without addressing it. Maybe the program he is in ramps up a lot in 4th grade, and it is harder for him to keep up. You really just have to do some detective work, and then get him extra help or tutoring if he gets too far behind. Good luck!

I agree with sj and suspect there is more than meets the eye here. I'd be mighty suspicious and wonder if there might be a bullying issue at school. Talk to his teachers and counselors and dig around a little and see if he is having a social issue which might be the root problem. I'd also ask his teacher if she'd be willing to work a little more with him to get him back up to where he used to be. Good luck.
