At what age is it appropriate to let your child go to the movies with friends by themselves?

I think 12 is too young. It does depend on the child's level of maturity, but I would be more comfortable with 14 years. At 14yrs the are a little more dicerning of people and understand better the expectations the parents have of them (hopefully).

When I was driving and picking up, or a parent I knew was driving, I let my kids go with friends (and, again, friends that I knew and felt good about) about the age of 12.
