What is a good age to start talking to girls about sex. We have 2 girls 10 and 12. I think it's time my husband thinks they may be too young. I saw a news cast tonight about teens and sex. I think some really good points were made. I got pregnant at 17 and I think I wouldn't had if I'd been better educated about sex and pregnancy. Are my girls too young? Concerned in Colorado.

I actually have a 10 year old son and my husband and I also struggled with the appropriate time to have the sex talk. Midway through this school year (5th), I learned that most of my friends with girls had already had the talk. It seems that girls mature faster and you definitely wouldn't want them to start their period not knowing what was going on. We decided to go ahead and start sharing the process of development and most of the details of sex. He has not asked a lot of questions but I feel if he now hears the street talk he will come back to us to clarify. The hardest part is starting the discussion.

My rule of thumb has been to wait until they start asking questions, but then I've had inquistive girls!
I think you're right to go ahead and share the basics with them. If they watch television or listen to popular music then they've heard "something" even if they haven't understood what they've heard. Once you and your husband talk to them, you'll have a better idea of what they know and if there are misunderstandings.
Good luck!

There is no time like the present. I think you are right to begin this education process with your girls. There are alot of resources out there to help you discuss these sensitive issues as well. I think you'll be surprised by what they already know just from talking to their friends! You could start out with age appropriate talks about respecting their bodies and keeping them healthy. The more information girls have about sex, the more likely they will be to make wise and informed decisions when the time comes. Good luck!
