Single Mother Looking For Improvement
Posted by: Ali on August 13, 2007 at 10:16PM EST
I don't know if this is the right place to put it but I am anxious about improving my life.   I am a 33 year old mother of three.  I've worked all my life in call centers in low paying jobs.  I never graduated from college because I have a hard time with classes like math and science and also its hard for me to pay attention and test taking.  But I want a better paying job where I can utilize my skills.  Tried using the local workforce service but they are no real help.  I have limited resources and income, but would like to be successful in life for the sake of my kids.  Are there any websites availabe with good information about wha is available for me?

Yea! Good for you! I entered back into the work force after being able to stay home for a number of years, and it is a daunting task to put yourself into a new situation. I have a couple of thoughts that I hope will be helpful. I would make a list of my strengths-- do you like to write? are you good with people? do you pay attention to details? do you speak a second language? You can have strengths in many areas you never thought of. Also, joblisting sites like Careerbuilder.com and Jobfox.com have career tests or application hints and tips. There are so many jobs out there that you never even know exist-- but there could be something perfect for you. And I wouldn't rule out education because you struggled when you were younger. Sometimes when we get older and it means more to us, it is easier to focus and learn. Even if it is just a class here or there-- upgrading your computer skills, or taking a management class shows an employer that you are wanting to learn and move up. I hope this helps some-- good luck and keep us posted!
