The saying “one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch” sounds trite but more often than not, true! It is unfortunate how one child can disrupt an entire class, even with the best of teachers. It is challenging to try to remain positive when your classroom dynamics are thrown off! What are your best-kept secrets for managing this child in your classroom!

I teach Sunday School and have a group of 15 first-graders for two hourseach Sunday morning. Most of the kids are well-behaved, but, like many classroom situations, there are a few who are most difficult to control. My biggest dilemma is that their parents choose not to give the kids their ADD medicines over the weekend -- and their behavior, lack of control and inability to focus on most tasks at hand is evident just about every Sunday morning.
Especially at religious school, I am not interested in any confrontations with parents and want to respect their wishes. I am interested from those Monday through Friday teachers out there, and parents as well, what is the rationale for skipping the medicine over the weekend? Does it really offer any advantages to the child??

School's been back in session three days now, and most of the kids are back in the swing of things. But some act like they've forgotten how to read, or basic lessons we finished with in December. We give them assignments over the holidays to keep their math skills, etc. sharp - but I'm guessing much of what gets done gets done all at once, the Sunday before they return to class. Are parents paying attention to homework when their kids are on vacation?

A lot of kids have another week of vacation before they head back to school.
Let me recommend that, if your children are still on break and haven't anything to do, get them reading!
A book will engage them (unlike TV), and will give you and your child something to talk about. Even a newspaper or a comic book (excuse me, "graphic novel") are great alternatives.
It also gets their minds back up-to-speed, ahead of the new semester.
