Please Accept My Apology
Posted by: Lily on November 16, 2007 at 10:35AM EST

It seems I've been apologizing a lot lately...to my friend because I didn't help her move, to my son because I forgot Dress Up As Your Favorite Book Character Day, to my neighbor for not returning her phone call, to my daughter for falling asleep before I tucked her in, to my son for not washing his favorite jeans for his non-uniform day, and on and on.

Luckily most of the people I'm apologizing to are running around trying to get everything done and like me, are not being too successful.  It reminds me of something my 104 year old grandmother used to say..."You can't be all things to all people."  So why am I trying?  I do need to be a good mother and a good friend and a good wife.  But being a good mother means it's high time I teach my 13 year old how to do his own laundry.  It also means saying no to some requests or not volunteering to do so much.

And guess what....my little man wasn't at all bothered when he got to school and lots of kids were dressed up and he was in his usual school clothes.  He just said he was Thomas from the yearbook!!

Well put sj! I recall and am grateful for all my Mom did (and still does) for me, but do recall the (rare) mistake or let-down. As a Mom myself, I have such a realization of all that she did and continues to do, and have actually called Mom to say "thanks" and to "apologize" for things I did when I was the ages my children are now.... Somehow we all survived and our kids will too. I am glad my kids have unwavering faith in me and have worked hard to earn that trust. The real trick, I find, is how to teach them that earning trust/praise/rewards is wonderful, while still helping them (and myself) understand the following: "you can be ANYTHING, but you don't have to be EVERYTHING"!!

Have a good day...you're doing a great job!

Apology accepted! These are the years in life where there truly do not seem to be enough hours in the day to get it all done! We all keep trying our best, and know that our friends and family members are doing the same. In the end, the little slip-ups are forgotten, and the big hugs are remembered!
