A "Fat" American Idol?
Posted by: BethJ007 on May 24, 2007 at 10:21AM EST

"And the winner of American Idol 2007 is..." (insert 10 minute long dramatic pause) "...Jordin Sparks!!"

I was really happy to hear the results of American Idol last night- I thought Jordin was completely deserving of the title. But something I heard on the radio the other day has been bugging me. I tuned into the Steve and Vicki Morning Show on Star94 on my way to work to hear a "healthcare professional" saying that Jordin should NOT be the next American Idol. But what got me was her reason why. It wasn't because Blake is a better entertainer, or Melinda is more consistant.

It was because Jordin is "fat".

The woman claimed that American kids don't need an overweight idol to look up to. Jordin would be promoting obesity in children. I was absolutely shocked. Jordin has more talent in her little finger then many people have in their whole body. So why shouldn't we embrace that fact that no, she is no 85-pound Nicole Richie. But wouldn't we rather focus on people that are talented even though they may have imperfections then people who just make you feel bad about yourself?

Your opinion is sooo true. Who cares if she isn't the skinniest person in the world? What truly matters is what is on the inside. If anything she would be promoting to the rest of the world that you don't have to be 90 pounds to be beatiful. Jordin is so incredibly talented, and she deserved to get picked as American Idol. She won because of her talent nother size, and that is so beautiful. Everyone else should look up to her as a role model because she went out and accomplished something she was passionate about without having to change herself for other's approval.

I like the fact that she isn't like all the other celebrities that we look up to. I think the media puts too much pressure on kids to be stick thin. It is a nice change of pase to have someone a little different. If everyone has a "perfect" body, than you will see more cases of anorexia. Jordin is a successful and talented woman, her size should not matter.

I think the fact that she doesn’t fit the stick thin stereotype makes her a good role model for young girls. The media has put too much of an influence on the importance of being skinny, pressure which has led to an increase in eating disorders. This pressure can be extremely dangerous, especially for teenagers. That comment about Jordin is this kind of mentality that leads to eating disorders and negative body images. Maybe she isn’t “perfect” by societal standards, but she is the perfect example of a beautiful, successful woman and she isn’t a stick figure as many young women in the media are today. In my opinion, we need more role models like Jordin.

I couldn't agree with you more. Obviously the majority would not agree with the person on the Steve and Vicki show. They voted for the most talented. Is Jordan even obese? I don't watch American idol, but to say she is promoting obesity sounds over the top. I believe she won due to her vocal cords, not her weight. This is so sad.

I heard the same thing on the Steve and Vicki show and wish that I heard the expert talk and defend her point. I think that there is a big problem with overeating and obesity in America, but I agree with you that you cannot target the people they see on TV. Kids are constantly surrounded with overweight people that it seems more like a norm than an exception these days.

In addition to the expert calling her fat, Steve or Vicki said that her handlers will change her anyway--look what they did to Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken. This also bothered me. I know that superstars change their appearance and look to be more attractive and attract attention from the media and fans, but to a certain extent I think that they should keep their identity.

That is a sad comment, because I really doubt that Jordin is fat! Most of the time she has been up on stage with two fairly petite men-- Blake and Ryan Seacrest. She is tall and not scrawny-- but I wouldn't call her fat. There are in reality, way too many overweight Americans-- but they are not that way because of someone they saw on TV! It's a ridiculous comment, but I'm sure all the American Idols have to get thick skin in dealing with critics!
