While the number of young children diagnosed with A-D-H-D has been
holding steady, the number of older kids ... teenagers with attention
problems has gone up every year since 1997. That's according to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And some experts worry that
many of these teens are being misdiagnosed.

Researchers in the field of gifted education have found that gifted children are too often diagnosed as having ADD or ADHD. This happens because gifted students are often very bored in regular classrooms, since they have already mastered the material that is being repeated for the other students' benefit. Boredom often leads to distractability and misbehavior. Testing should include assessments of gifted abilities, before diagnoses of ADD or ADHD.
